Each of us communicates differently, but our messages can be categorized into a few distinct styles. This assignment contains four separate steps. First, take the communication style assessment (activity 1) and list your dominant style in the space below. When finished, read the following article for a breakdown of each style:, then reference the following website for more information about differentiating between aggressive and assertive messages: (activity 2). Once you complete the reading, create three different messages designed to be a verbal communication, each of which will address the same scenario (activity 3). The first message should be written in the passive communication style, the second should be the aggressive style, and the third should be assertive. In addition, the third should conform to the 7C’s of effective communication from the first assignment. Finally, write a one-paragraph explanation of how assertive communication will help you manage your school experience (activity 4).

Though there are several styles of communication, assertive communication tends to be the most effective method of problem solving. Assertive communication involves give and take. It is a style of communication in which the speaker feels there is a mutually beneficial solution to a problem rather than passive communication where the speaker gives in to the other person, or aggressive communication where the speaker makes demands regardless of the interests of the others. In other words, passive communication can be thought of as lose-win, aggressive communication as win-lose, while assertive communication is win-win.

For the following assignment, you will create three different messages, one passive, one aggressive, and one assertive based on the scenario below. Each message should be considered a spoken statement. In other words, you are writing as if you were talking to a classmate.


  • You have been assigned a group project by your instructor. Each member has a role in the group. The assignment is due in two weeks and one of your group members has not been doing their part. They were supposed to have turned in their research yesterday, but have not. When asked about it, they simply shrugged and said, “Whatever, it’s no big deal.” Since the entire group gets the same grade, his/her lack of effort may harm your grade. You have decided to confront him/her about it, but aren’t sure what to say. In the space below, create three different messages using passive, aggressive, and assertive communication. Each message should be two to three sentences long and conform to the characteristics of each communication style.
